Two 18-year-olds have been sentenced to life imprisonment following the murder of wine seller and part-time insurance salesman Omar Raza.
A report by the
Evening Standard cited a witness who likened the killing to a horror movie scene. Raza – aged 23 and engaged – was stabbed multiple times near Turnpike Lane on February 15.
Here’s what happened, according to
Get West London:
- Raza and his fiancée met Akol Garang through Gumtree when they were looking to buy a laptop.
- During the meetup it was found that Garang had no car insurance, and Raza – who earned commission through a broker he knew – offered cover.
- Garang paid £300 as first instalment – with a balance due worth £1,600.
- No further payments were made for over a month.
- Raza eventually went to Garang’s residence and took a laptop he was selling.
- Garang used a different number to pose as a woman wanting to buy insurance from Raza.
- Raza went to meet the ‘prospective policyholder’ where he would be stabbed – in broad daylight – as well as robbed by Garang and accomplice George Rodriguez Galean.
Both were found guilty of murder and conspiracy to rob – with Garang sentenced to at least 19 years in prison; his accomplice, a minimum of 15 years. They were also handed a concurrent sentence of six years for the robbery plot.
