A town in BC has recently permitted local motorists to operate their golf carts on residential streets.
On Friday, the small vehicles were officially given permission to drive around Chase, BC’s roads; however, drivers must fulfill a number of requirements, such as possessing insurance, before they can take their golf carts out for a spin.

The project is something that Mayor Rick Berrigan has been pushing for more than four years.
“It’s getting quite a buzz now,” Berrigan told
CBC, noting that 14 carts have already been issued permits to operate on the town’s streets.
“Every day you a see a couple of them on the road. There’s not a big influx of golf carts, but it’s starting. I can see this taking off.”

For motorists to use their golf carts on the road, they need insurance, a valid license, and a village permit. Additionally, motorists will only be allowed to operate their carts during the day.
The two-year project, announced by the Ministry of Transportation last summer, was intended to provide seniors with more transportation options. Chase and Qualicum Beach were chosen as pilot communities due to their older populations.
Residents of Chase, however, expressed their concerns about the town’s proposed limit of 30 km/h for all vehicles once the golf carts are allowed on the road. The village council reworked the plan over several months, changing the rules so that motorists only have to slow down when they spot a golf cart.
