NRMA, IAG aid Cyclone Alfred victims

Communities across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales are dealing with the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with insurance providers NRMA Insurance and its parent company, IAG, ramping up emergency support efforts to assist affected customers.

IAG, which owns NRMA Insurance, CGU, WFI and ROLLiN’, had received around 400 claims by the morning of March 9, rising to 960 by March 10. Most claims are from NRMA Insurance customers for property damage caused by extreme winds, fallen trees and heavy rain.

Luke Gallagher, NRMA Insurance executive general manager of claims, said the devastation was widespread.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation already caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred across South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Our assessors and repairers have been on the ground conducting emergency repairs over the weekend across impacted regions to help our customers who have experienced significant damage,” he said.

Immediate assistance for affected customers

NRMA Insurance and IAG are urging customers to lodge claims as soon as possible so they can access immediate assistance, including temporary accommodation and emergency financial aid.

IAG has mobilised additional claims consultants, assessors and builders to help speed up recovery efforts. The company has also deployed extra assessors from New Zealand and reinforced its Partner Builder Network to conduct emergency repairs. Meanwhile, the NRMA Insurance helicopter is on standby in Coffs Harbour, ready to assist emergency authorities if needed.

Warnings against “disaster chasers”

As recovery efforts continue, NRMA Insurance has warned residents to be wary of “disaster chasers” – unauthorised contractors or individuals who take advantage of disaster victims by offering quick repairs, inspections or clean-ups in exchange for upfront payments.

“It is appalling that disaster chasers take advantage of people during this time of vulnerability,” Gallagher said. “Watch out for any tradesperson, assessor or builder that has approached you before you have lodged a claim, or if they ask you to pay your excess or other money to them directly.”

Customers are advised to contact their insurer directly to arrange assessments and repairs.

Steps for affected homeowners

Residents returning to their homes are advised to prioritise safety and follow key steps, including documenting damage through photos or videos, removing hazardous or water-damaged items, and keeping records of disposed belongings to aid in claim processing.

Claims can be lodged online or via phone through NRMA Insurance, CGU, WFI, or ROLLiN’.
