Allianz Australia has appointed Phuong Ly as its new chief general manager for commercial, responsible for leading the insurer's newly created commercial division that focuses on small to medium enterprises, mid-corp markets, and the insurer's specialist areas such as Underwriting Agencies and Hunter Premium Funding.
Ly has nearly 20 years of insurance experience, gained across several insurance providers in Australia. He joins Allianz from QBE, where he served as the chief underwriting officer. He also held executive leadership roles in the commercial and broker and agency areas within IAG, including most recently as executive general manager for business distribution, and he held prior leadership positions at CGU Insurance.
Allianz Australia managing director Richard Feledy commented: “As well as having delivered outstanding commercial results, Phuong is known to be a strategic thinker and engaging leader. Having worked in insurance his whole career, including in underwriting and claims, Phuong clearly understands the customer perspective and frontline challenges.
Most importantly, Phuong has a transformative mindset and focus on mentoring teams. These elements combined make Phuong the ideal choice to lead and execute on the strategic direction of our new commercial division. We are delighted to welcome Phuong to Allianz and our Australian senior leadership team.”
Allianz created the commercial division in December 2020 as part of a larger organisational realignment around core customer segments.
Phuong commented: “I am thrilled to be joining Allianz Australia at this exciting time of massive transformation. Allianz has navigated the industry's ongoing regulatory shifts with agility and rapidly evolved to meet partners' and subsequently customers' needs. I look forward to working with a high-performing team to build on the already-strong relationships and offerings across partner channels, as well identifying opportunities to positively contribute to the insurance industry in this time of change.”
