Code Administration Committee cracks on with motor code overhaul

The Code Administration Committee (CAC) has started updating and improving the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct.

The move is a response to Dr Michael Schaper's independent review, which outlined 15 recommendations.

According to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA), the CAC will prioritise the following:

• improving the MVIRI Code of Conduct's readability and accessibility;
• enhancing the code's governance; and
• improving promotion and education of the code and engagement with stakeholders.

The CAC already conducted meetings about the first two priorities and planned more meetings to progress the code's amendments.

Independent review

Dr Schaper was appointed to conduct an independent review of the MVIRI Code of Conduct in December 2022. In May 2023, the CAC received the final report.

The report outlined 15 recommendations in response to the review's terms of reference focusing on:

• the effectiveness of dispute resolution process under the MVIRI Code of Conduct;
• the code's awareness and accessibility;
• code compliance;
• governance of the code and the CAC; and
• other issues related to the effective governance and operation of the code.
