USAA has announced the passing of former Major General Joe Robles, Jr. (pictured), who served as the firm’s president and chief executive until February 2015.
Honoring Robles’ legacy, USAA stated: “Joe was a soldier at his core, and his service included multiple deployments and several distinguished honors. General Robles knew what it meant to serve, and he did so every day of his life. He led with integrity and commitment – to our teammates, our members, and our great country.
“Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Born in January 1946, Robles came to Ohio when he was three years old, moving from Puerto Rico. His 28-year Army career began in 1966.
According to his obituary, Robles passed away on July 4. He suffered from Parkinson’s for several years before his retirement in 2015. Robles joined USAA in 1994 as chief financial officer and became CEO in 2007.
“During his tenure at USAA, Joe and his team raised the membership and profits to unprecedented levels,” reads part of the obituary. “Joe was popular with his staff and the rank-and-file members of USAA. He also served in many civic projects and charitable works.”
The above is echoed in Robles’ LinkedIn bio, which states: “Under his leadership as CEO from 2007 to 2015, USAA saw growth of 53% in members, 45% in revenue, 55% in products, and 68% in net worth, during the longest and deepest economic slump in memory (2007 to 2013).
“During that time, USAA returned $7.3 billion to its members and customers through dividends, distributions, bank rebates, and rewards.”
Robles was 78. He will be laid to rest with full military honors on July 19 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, with a memorial service set for July 17 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
