Specialist managing general agent (MGA) Phoenix Specialty and global insurer Tokio Marine Kiln (TMK) have both announced key underwriting hires as they look to expand their market presence.
Phoenix Specialty has bolstered its team with the appointment of Timothy Christmas (pictured above) as a construction underwriter. The move follows a period of significant growth since the firm’s launch in February last year.
Christmas joins from RSA Insurance, where he was a senior construction underwriter. He has more than a decade of experience in construction underwriting, having previously held roles at Zurich and Allianz UK. His expertise includes portfolio management and new business underwriting in the London market.
Phoenix initially entered the market with Contractors All Risks and Contractors Plant & Equipment products and has plans to expand its offering with additional specialist construction products and international growth.
“We are thrilled to welcome Timothy to Phoenix Specialty,” said Andrew Charlton, managing director at Phoenix Specialty. “He has great foundations in the construction market, cultivating an excellent broking network. His London Market experience will be invaluable as we continue to innovate and grow.”
James Wilson has been appointed as head of special risks at Tokio Marine Kiln, with plans for him to take up the role in the autumn. Wilson will report to chief underwriting officer Vivek Syal and will be responsible for expanding TMK’s special risks portfolio.
Wilson brings 16 years of experience in political violence, terrorism, credit, and political risk insurance. He joined the company from The Hartford, where he served as head of political risks, and previously as head of credit and political risk insurance. His career also includes roles at Chubb and Catlin.
TMK’s special risks division underwrites a range of global risks, including political risk, political violence and terrorism, consequential loss, trade disruption, and surety. Wilson will be tasked with strengthening TMK’s lead market position across all key lines.
“I’m excited to welcome James to TMK as part of our strategy to build our lead market capabilities across our portfolio,” said Syal. “James’ appointment signals our intent to position TMK as a leader in the Special Risks arena, and I look forward to working with him and the team to further our ambitions.”
