The insurance industry has once again been alerted to the threat of terrorism in the UK after an incident outside Parliament this morning.
Though not yet confirmed as a terrorist attack – police radio reported the incident would be treated as “counter terror” – several pedestrians were injured when a car smashed into security barriers outside Parliament.
According to a BBC report, a man has been arrested.
“At 7.37am today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament,” said Scotland Yard in a statement.
“The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene. We will issue further information when we have it.”
As a result of the incident, streets around Victoria Tower Gardens, Millbank and Parliament Square have been cordoned off and there are dozens of armed police at the scene.
“I saw smoke coming out of a vehicle. It’s all been high speed – you’ve got the specialists coming in… it’s been dramatic,” one bystander told Sky News.
We’ll bring you more on the story as it becomes available.
