Global Insurance Law Connect (GILC) announced the inclusion of Buenos Aires-based Abeledo Gottheil Abogados in its legal network.

Abeledo Gottheil, which was established in 1963, is the fifth firm from the Americas to join the network and the 26th firm globally. With over 60 lawyers and 15 partners, the law firm provides legal services with focus areas in insurance law, covering broad topics such as corporate law, tax, labour law, contracts, litigation and arbitration.

The law firm provides legal services to some big-name clients in the industrial and commercial sectors, including energy, automotive, aviation, technology and electronics, food, beverages, engineering, procurement and construction, as well as consulting services.

Commenting on the announcement, Matias Ponferrada, a partner at Abeledo Gottheil, said: “Argentina is in an interesting point of deregulation and reform under President Milei. His pursuit of economic stability and growth will have beneficial impacts on the insurance industry, and it is my hope that, in this positive climate, our firm’s expertise of this market will be a valuable addition to the network. I look forward to collaborating on international cases with fellow firms in the region and around the world.”

Meanwhile, Gillian Davidson, chair of GILC at Sparke Helmore, welcomed Abeledo Gottheil, saying that the firm’s inclusion marks the network’s continued expansion in the Americas.

“Argentina is an important insurance market in South America,” she remarked. “Abeledo Gottheil is a leading full-service law firm in Argentina, and has extensive expertise in working with clients in the region and globally.”

GILC was launched in 2017 by seven firms focused on insurance law. These firms include the UK’s Beale & Co, Italy’s Batini Traverso Grasso & Associati, France’s Byrd & Associates and the US’ Foran Glennon Palandech Ponzi & Rudloff PC.

The network offers an extensive network of local lawyers with specialised knowledge in insurance law, which allows member firms to efficiently and effectively provide legal services to their clients. The network also aims to provide re/insurers, brokers and policyholders network access.

One of the services the network has offered after its formation is the Risk Radar. Launched in 2019, GILC’s Risk Radar presents key themes that insurers should be wary of and informed about during the year. These key themes include those with global relevance, including regulatory issues and the impact of technology, as well as country-specific changes, like legal reforms in certain countries.
