Lloyd’s has announced that Rebekah Clement (pictured) will step down from her role as corporate affairs director to take up a new position outside the organisation.
Clement, who was appointed as Lloyd’s first corporate affairs and sustainability director, has overseen efforts to develop the market’s approach to sustainability. Her remit included shaping Lloyd’s communications strategy and contributing to its profile as a global reinsurance marketplace and convenor on resilience-related issues.
She leaves Lloyd’s with more than two decades of corporate affairs experience, spanning government policy, communications, brand reputation, and media. Her previous roles include senior positions in both the public and private sectors, notably with New Zealand’s Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
In her most recent work at Lloyd’s, Clement was responsible for establishing and leading the organisation’s sustainability framework and related initiatives. In 2024, the organisation notably released its Sustainability Report, highlighting progress towards eight priority United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Lloyd’s has also engaged in strategic collaborations, such as chairing the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Insurance Task Force and partnering with entities like the Earth Space Sustainability Initiative and the Lloyd’s Disaster Risk Facility.
Despite these efforts, Lloyd’s has faced criticism regarding its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. A 2024 report by ShareAction ranked Lloyd’s near the bottom among global insurers for responsible underwriting and investment performance, citing continued exposure to fossil fuel projects and weapons.
Lloyd’s responded by affirming its commitment to supporting the transition to net zero by 2050, while noting that individual businesses within the market set their own strategies.
Clement’s departure from the organisation also follows a major leadership revamp, with Patrick Tiernan taking over as chief executive officer (CEO) from June 1, 2025, following a formal appointment by the Council of Lloyd’s.
