The Association of British Insurers (ABI) will have its first-ever director of membership and commercial development when Sheryl Fernando joins in late November.
“It is an absolute honour to be joining Hannah [Gurga] and the team at the ABI at such a seminal time for the industry,” said Fernando, who currently serves as membership and member governance director at banking and finance trade body UK Finance from which she is making the switch.
“Insurance and long-term savings have always been an essential part of the consumer and economic agenda, and more so now in these innovative and changing times. The ABI and its members are at the forefront of the opportunities and challenges that presents, and I really look forward to working with them on that journey.”
In her new role within the ABI executive team, Fernando will have overall responsibility for the association’s event, membership, and commercial income.
“We are delighted to welcome Sheryl to the ABI,” commented director general Hannah Gurga. “Ensuring we are delivering for members is my priority, and Sheryl brings a wealth of experience on member engagement and collaboration, as well as commercial development and in running events.
“I have had the privilege to work with Sheryl previously and know first-hand what a great asset she will be.”
Meanwhile ABI president and Royal London Group chief executive Barry O’Dwyer described the new role as an important one in supporting the trade body in delivering “the very best” outcomes for its members.
“Sheryl has outstanding experience in this area,” noted O’Dwyer, “and I look forward to welcoming her to the ABI later in the year.”
