It looks like gig economy insurer Zego is on a roll, announcing another new offering… this time it’s in partnership with insurance group RSA.
With traditional commercial van and car insurance being “prohibitively expensive” for occasional or part-time workers – given that it is designed for full-time work on an annual basis – Zego has teamed up with RSA to allow flexible courier drivers to purchase pay-as-you-go insurance to cover part-time parcel delivery and courier services.
“E-commerce is booming with nearly £10 billion spent on parcel delivery alone in the UK,” noted Zego co-founder Harry Franks. “Unsurprisingly, there’s high demand for part-time couriers, but for many it doesn’t make sense to spend thousands of pounds on an annual policy if they only want to do a couple of deliveries over Christmas.
“This is about personalising insurance to fit how people are working, and we are pleased to be working with RSA on this.”
Currently Zego also offers scooter, private hire, car, and bicycle insurance. In addition, the insurtech provides pay-as-you-go public liability protection for freelancers and self-employed workers such as photographers and babysitters.
As for the courier offering, Zego said its technology integrates directly with its partners’ platforms – meaning couriers are insured automatically for the time they work. The insurance, with pricing starting from 80 pence per hour, is then charged by the minute after the first hour.
“The nature of work is changing; more and more people are now working part-time and for themselves,” said RSA delegated director Steve Hedge. “We are delighted to partner with Zego and make use of the technical integration with their platform partners to understand better and serve this important market.”
