Re/insurance professionals and policymakers will examine how climate change is reshaping risk across global economies at the upcoming Bermuda Risk Summit 2025.

The summit will feature a keynote address by journalist Jeff Goodell (pictured above), who will discuss the increase in extreme heat and wildfires and their effects on public health, ecosystems, economies, and global stability.

Goodell, who has spent over 20 years reporting on climate issues, will draw on the themes of his latest book, “The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet,” which discusses the impacts of extreme heat and wildfires.

His earlier work also addressed the effects of sea-level rise on coastal economies – a trend that is now evident in many vulnerable regions.

In his keynote, Goodell will address the growing frequency and severity of these events, explain how they affect various sectors, and outline the need for coordinated measures to build resilience in a warming world.

Goodell’s keynote will focus on the scientific and societal effects of climate change and will be followed by an industry session on the evolving role of reinsurance and risk management in responding to climate-driven disasters.

In addition to the keynote, the summit will offer expert panels, strategic discussions, and networking sessions for industry participants.

The session is expected to attract industry professionals, policymakers, and global leaders. In Bermuda – where 75% of global property and catastrophe reinsurance is managed – the discussion holds relevance.

As wildfires in California and other regions lead to significant losses, Bermuda-based reinsurers are handling billions in claims as part of efforts to support recovery.

Though they are expected to hit serious highs, Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) chief executive John Huff recently expressed his confidence in assuring that the financial effect on the island nation’s reinsurance sector will be manageable.

Christian Dunleavy, group president at Aspen, a sponsor at the summit, highlighted that climate change is not a distant threat, and the economic impact is staggering.

Registration for Bermuda Risk Summit 2025 is open at a special rate until Feb. 28; from March 1-10, standard rates will apply.
