It’s the morning after the night before, a day in which New Zealand picks up the pieces after the remnants of ex-Cyclone Gita hurtled through the country.
Though there is light at the end of the tunnel, the heavy rainfall persists in many areas this morning with weather forecasts highlighting that the more active parts of the storm have moved south although the troublesome centre of the storm still sits east of Christchurch at the time of writing. There are still strong winds and persistent rain and don’t be surprised too, if you’re travelling over a higher route, if you meet some snowfall.
For insurers and brokers looking to get their recovery work under way, here is a current assessment of how things stand:
Christchurch: Although there was a high level of rainfall, the council states that it received around 50% less than predicted.
Wellington area: SH1 has suffered damage, notably between Pukerua Bay and Paekakariki. One lane is open at the time of writing.
West Coast: Power supplies are not guaranteed and there are a host of road closures.
Nelson/Tasman: Weather is currently dying down but there are still heavy rains forecast around midday. The road from Riwaka to Takaka also has some closures.
Taranaki: Many residents – reported to be in the thousands - remain without power.
We’ll bring you more reaction to the Cyclone as it breaks.
