A US-based pioneer in mobile telematics is launching its own app in Canada to aid the country’s insurance companies in keeping track of their policyholders.
DrivSafe’s app helps auto insurers evaluate the driving habits of the policyholders, a release said, and also aids in the providing of discounts to good drivers. The app is available for both iPhone and Android-based smartphones, free of charge for personal use.
The company behind DrivSafe believes that its app “offers an economical way to improve pricing accuracy by including driving habits into the traditional pricing process.”

The app works by comparing the driving behavior of individual drivers to other motorists with each driver issued a personalized report card. The scores on the cards range from A to F, with A being the best possible score and F a failure. Dimensions such as distance travelled, speed, time of day, geographic footprint, distractions while driving, and so on, are monitored by the app through DrivSafe’s proprietary technology since these factors have been shown to correlate with the risk of getting into a collision.
On top of grading driving behavior, the app offers tips to drivers on how they can improve their driving habits, thus allowing them to save on their auto insurance premiums and improve general road safety.
