Putting its money – or in this case food – where its mouth is, the Insurance Bureau of Canada is making good on its promise to help those in need at area food banks.

The IBC’s Ontario vice president Ralph Palumbo, along with Brampton-Springdale MPP Linda Jeffrey, presented cheques of $2,500 to two Brampton area food banks recently – the Serva Food Bank and Good Food Brampton Community Kitchen.

The IBC had previously donated $25,000 to the Ontario government’s ice storm relief efforts on January 2, as the province had vowed to match all corporate donations in co-ordination with the Daily Bread Food Bank to help the hungry.

“IBC and its members have a long and proud history of working locally to make a difference,” says Palumbo. “We hope that this donation will go a long way to help those in need.”

The Seva (pronounced ‘say-va’, the Sikh word for ‘selfless service) Food Bank provides “safe, nutritious and culturally-appropriate food to low-income families living in Mississauga’s L5B and L5C postal codes,” according to the website.

The Good Food Brampton Community Kitchen was established by Catholic Family Services Peel Dufferin (CFSPD) in 2013, and is located in the Hon. William G. David Centre for Families in Brampton. In its 2012-1013 annual report, 53 per cent of those using the kitchen earn a family income of $30,000 or less in an area where the family average is $87,765.

The CFSPD serves more than 29,000 men, women and children each year.
