The
Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has announced that it is teaming up with PEI’s Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, and Cycling PEI, to help promote the recent changes to the Highway Traffic Act.
“I am delighted to congratulate the Government of PEI and all stakeholders on these important amendments,” said IBC Atlantic vice-president Amanda Dean. “Road safety is something that IBC’s members are passionate about. In fact, many of today’s most effective road safety measures are the result, in part, of insurer advocacy. However there is still more that can be done. IBC will continue to work with governments across Canada to make our roads safer.”

Some of the changes the Government of PEI has introduced include the addition of the “one metre rule”, which requires drivers passing cyclists to leave at least one metre between the cyclists and the vehicles, and a requirement for drivers to be cautious when opening the doors of their vehicles.
“This campaign aims to raise awareness of important legislative changes aimed at making our Island roads safer for cyclists,” said Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Hon. Paula Biggar. “By working with groups like Insurance Bureau of Canada and Cycling PEI, we can make sure that PEI’s roads are safer for everyone.”
“Changes like those being made to the Highway Traffic Act happen when citizens and communities recognize that our roadways must be safe for everyone,” Cycling PEI executive director Mike Connelly. “We all must share the road. We all have a role to play in keeping cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians safe.”
