Allianz Australia has announced key senior appointments within its leadership team, effective from April 1.

The moves come as the insurer responds to both internal leadership transitions and external market pressures affecting Australian businesses.

New chief general manager commercial

Julie Mitchell (pictured) will take on the role of chief general manager commercial, succeeding Phuong Ly, who is set to lead Allianz Commercial UK as its new managing director.

Mitchell has been with Allianz for over two decades, most recently serving as chief general manager, personal injury. Her previous work has involved engagement with Australian businesses across sectors in the area of risk protection and injury management.

In a statement, Mitchell said she looked forward to leading the commercial division and working alongside brokers to support business clients.

“Throughout my career, it has been a privilege to work closely with small and large Australian businesses, helping them to protect their most valuable assets. I am excited to expand upon this, in my new role leading the Allianz Australia Commercial team. I look forward to collaborating with insurance brokers and continuing to support Australian businesses,” she said.

These appointments occur at a time when rising financial pressures are contributing to higher business failure rates across the country. Recent data from CreditorWatch showed a 47% increase in business-to-business invoice defaults in the year to February, marking a significant indicator of ongoing insolvency risk. The organisation’s Business Risk Index pointed to multiple contributing factors, including reduced consumer spending, continued cost-of-living pressures, and the effects of remote work on urban business activity.

Mark Pittman, general manager of government services, will step in as acting chief general manager personal injury while the company recruits a permanent successor.

New chief people and culture officer

In a separate leadership change, Allianz has appointed Anna Stavropoulos as chief people and culture officer. She replaces Vicky Drakousis, who has been appointed to a global role with Allianz Technology in Munich.

Stavropoulos previously held the role of general manager for people advisory, talent, and learning. Her career in human resources spans more than 20 years in financial services.

Her appointment coincides with findings from Aon’s 2025 Human Capital Employee Sentiment Study, which indicated that 60% of employees are considering leaving their jobs within the next 12 months. The report cited shifting employee values, with increased prioritisation of well-being, flexibility, and cultural alignment over traditional incentives like pay and promotion.

Stavropoulos noted the importance of building inclusive and supportive workplace environments, aligning with broader trends in workforce expectations.

“I have always been passionate about creating an environment where every team member feels valued, supported, and inspired to contribute their best. In this new role, I am excited to continue to build a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and customer obsession that drives our collective success and strengthens our commitment to excellence,” she said.

Allianz Australia managing director Richard Feledy said both Mitchell and Stavropoulos bring extensive leadership experience and will support the company’s strategic direction through ongoing industry changes.

“We are thrilled to announce these appointments, which reflect the exceptional talent within Allianz Australia,” he said. “Julie and Anna bring a wealth of experience and leadership to their new roles, and we are confident they will continue to propel Allianz Australia forward.”
