Specialist re/insurance broker Tysers has appointed Babita Rai (pictured above left) as CEO of Tysers Singapore and William Furness-Smith (pictured above right) as head of marine for the APAC region.

Rai joined Tysers in 2023 as managing director, overseeing reinsurance operations in Singapore. In her new role, she will focus on expanding core business areas and enhancing client relationships throughout APAC.

With over 20 years of experience, Rai has held leadership roles at firms including JB Boda, UIB Asia Reinsurance Brokers, and Guy Carpenter, gaining extensive industry knowledge.

Tysers CEO Tom Wilson stated that Rai’s role, supported by her team, will contribute significantly to Tysers’ APAC expansion.

“Supported by her excellent team, Babita will be instrumental in driving our strategic expansion in APAC, our broader reinsurance growth ambitions and providing clients with the superior service that is synonymous with Tysers. Her appointment represents an important and strategic investment in strengthening Tysers’ presence in the region,” Wilson said.

Meanwhile, in his new role as head of marine, APAC, Furness-Smith has relocated to Tysers’ Singapore office. He will work across Tysers’ Singapore, Dubai, and Hong Kong offices to develop solutions for marine sector risks.

With more than 15 years of marine broking experience, Furness-Smith specializes in placing complex hull and cargo risks in international markets. Before joining Tysers in 2015, he held positions at Marsh & McLennan and Dry Cargo Shipbroker.

Wilson said that Furness-Smith’s move demonstrates Tysers’ commitment to its regional growth, highlighting his expertise in creating risk programs tailored to client needs.

“His move illustrates Tysers’ commitment to providing an expert and skilled service as we continue to grow our operations and presence in key markets,” Wilson said. “It’s an extremely exciting time for Tysers and the appointments of Babita and William reflect our strategy of attracting and retaining talented people.”
