MLC Life Insurance (MLC) has appointed industry veteran Peter Smith to lead its new business team.

Smith has extensive experience in leadership and business development, having previously worked in leadership roles with major companies such as Resolution Life, Munich Re, Lockton, and MetLife.

His previous experience has included delivering insurance solutions for funds such as Hostplus, Cbus, Rest, and First Super.

Peter Smith's responsibilities at MLC

Smith joined MLC as the head of business development. He will be responsible for growing the business's group insurance distribution and executing a new business development strategy focusing on integrating a new group insurance digital capability to help super funds transform their members' insurance journey.

Smith said that “few are better placed to understand member needs and the ethos of Australia’s industry super funds than MLC Life Insurance” due to its mutual status and its position within the global Nippon Life Group.

MLC chief executive officer Kent Griffin said Smith's appointment reflects the company's aim to demonstrate how its total customer experience benefits trustees and superannuation fund members.

“Following a period of stabilisation, we're excited to return to focus on sustainably managing risk and growth across the business, particularly in the group insurance space,” Griffin said.

MLC chief group officer Mark Puli said: “MLC Life has gone through a period of massive transformation, and Peter's significant experience and outstanding commercial mindset will position us well as we continue to build a highly skilled team and offer a competitive advantage to our partners and their members.

“Our ability to deliver an excellent member experience, including through digital integration, helps us meet and exceed the expectations of members, and Peter will help us make that case to our current and prospective partners.”

The announcement follows MLC's double senior appointments to boost its financial adviser support.
