Wotton + Kearney has announced the promotion of 31 lawyers, with changes effective from Jan. 1.
The promotions include two new partners, alongside elevations to special counsel, senior associate, and associate roles. Offices across Auckland, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, and Wellington are represented in this latest round of career advancements.
The move reinforces the firm’s expertise in insurance law and risk management, covering areas such as commercial litigation, cyber and privacy, financial lines, general liability, health, property and energy, and workplace safety.
Sam Barker (pictured left), based in Melbourne, has been promoted to partner within the property, energy, and infrastructure practice.
He brings experience in advising insurers and professionals on matters involving construction, property, and energy. His practice spans defence, recovery, and coverage cases, with a particular focus on construction disputes and professional liability claims.
Trent O’Neill (pictured right), located in Perth, steps into the partner role in the general liability team. His legal practice includes professional indemnity, property, recovery, and maritime claims. He also advises insurers on policy interpretation and represents clients in state and federal courts.

Twelve lawyers have been elevated to senior associate positions, with representatives in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth across a variety of practice areas.
Additionally, 13 associates have been promoted, extending across Australia and New Zealand. These promotions include expertise in general liability, financial lines, and workplace safety.
Wotton + Kearney has seen significant developments in 2024, including the rollout of a legal AI tool, the opening of its first Asian office, and a corporate rebrand.
Founded in 2002, the firm has expanded its operations to include 10 offices across Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. It now comprises 89 partners and over 700 professionals.
