The council has closed multiple waterways and beaches along The Strand Queensland, urging residents to avoid all contact with potentially contaminated waters.
This announcement comes as water quality testing continues in the aftermath of recent flooding in North and Far North Queensland reporting property damage in affected areas.
Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney emphasized the health risks associated with flood-contaminated waters.
"Floodwaters can contain many bacteria that can make you unwell," she said, explaining the proactive closure of popular recreational areas including The Strand, Pallarenda, and Five Mile Beach.
The extensive list of closed areas encompasses major recreational spots including The Rockpool, Tobruk Pool beach area, and Riverway Lagoons.
Additionally, several parks and water bodies remain off-limits, including Anderson Park, Balls Lane, Mindham Park, and multiple lake systems throughout Idalia, Castletown, and the Showgrounds area.
Green corridors in Annandale, Sussex Street drains, and both Ross River and Ross Creek are also affected by the closures. Council water quality experts continue to monitor these locations through regular testing to ensure public safety.
The closures affect all forms of water interaction, including fishing and recreational activities, as contamination from the rain event poses potential health risks to residents and visitors. The council's water quality team will maintain regular testing protocols until water safety can be assured.
Residents are advised to comply with closure notices and avoid contact with water in these areas until further notice.
The council will continue to provide updates on water quality testing results and any changes to current closures through official channels.
