Catastrophe & Flood

The Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) has launched “Tuesday Deep-Dives”, a new webinar series focused on providing technical insights for insurance professionals.

The sessions will feature industry experts discussing key insurance topics, case studies, and practical applications relevant to professionals in the sector. The series will run on a fortnightly basis.

Industry-focused professional development

ANZIIF CEO Katrina Shanks said the webinar series is designed to meet industry demand for targeted professional development.

“At ANZIIF, we are committed to providing insurance professionals with the knowledge and expertise they need to navigate an evolving industry. The Tuesday Deep-Dives series is designed to deliver targeted, technical insights from industry experts, ensuring professionals can apply what they learn directly to their role,” she said.

First session: catastrophe risk and ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred

The first webinar, “Catastrophe Perils: Insights into Risk Assessment and Cyclone Alfred’s Impact”, is scheduled for March 18.

Industry experts from Xceedance will provide insights into catastrophe (CAT) and non-CAT risks, fundamentals of catastrophe modelling, and the broader impact of Cyclone Alfred on Australia’s insurance market.

On March 14, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) reported that more than 53,000 claims had been lodged due to damages caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Insurers are actively responding, with teams assisting policyholders in impacted areas across New South Wales, including Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Ballina, and Tweed Heads, as well as in Queensland regions such as Redlands, Hervey Bay, Logan, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.

The ICA said insurers have provided nearly $2.4 million in emergency payments to approximately 6,000 policyholders. These funds have been allocated primarily for immediate needs, such as temporary accommodation and replacing perishable goods.

Registrations for the first webinar are available through the ANZIIF website.

Expansion of ANZIIF’s Rising Stars Seminar

Alongside the webinar series, ANZIIF has announced the expansion of its “Rising Stars in Insurance Seminar”, which will be held in five locations in 2025.

Previously hosted in Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland, the event will now also take place in Brisbane and Perth, providing increased access for early-career insurance professionals.

The seminar aims to equip emerging professionals with industry knowledge and practical skills. The 2025 theme, “Building Meaningful Connections”, will focus on strategies for establishing and maintaining professional relationships.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for young insurance professionals to gain practical insights they can apply to their roles, helping them build relationships that will last for the duration of their careers,” Shanks said.
