As Australia celebrates Women's History Month, Insurance Business Australia (IBW) shares how award-winning Gallagher Australia (Gallagher) CEO Sarah Lyons stood out this year for her commitment to building a fair, sustainable, relevant, diverse, and inclusive future for the insurance industry.
Lyons (pictured), who featured in the IBW Hot List 2022 and Elite Women in Insurance 2021, is the first woman to lead a tier-one, international insurance broker in Australia. She was recognised across the insurance industry for her leadership skills and for helping make insurance more diverse and inclusive.
In a previous interview with IBW, Lyons shared that Gallagher achieved an enviable male-to-female staff ratio at multiple career levels, without formal quotas or targets.
“I pick the right person for the job, irrespective of gender, so we're quite fortunate that we've managed to get close to a 50/50 split because that happened organically,” she told IBW. “What we do is we create a level playing field for all colleagues to progress, irrespective of gender.”
With a strong focus on inclusion and diversity, Gallagher gives people career opportunities, regardless of background or gender. According to IBW's Hot List 2022 report, more than 50% of the major brokerage's workforce is female, and the number of leadership positions makes it particularly attractive to women who aspire to work in senior roles.
Aligned with Gallagher's commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion, Lyons encourages women to apply for more senior roles.
