Uber has recruited a diversity and inclusion leader at a major insurance broking and risk management company to help clean up its toxic and discriminatory work culture, it has been reported.

The appointment follows an internal investigation into Uber's corporate culture, which resulted in a report proposing that the ride-sharing service give its head of diversity more power and rename the position “chief diversity and inclusion officer.”

Taking on the new role as Uber's first chief and diversity inclusion officer is Bo Young Lee, current head of diversity and inclusion at Marsh, who will join the company in late March in New York, and will report to Liane Hornsey, Uber's head of HR, Gizmodo reported.

"As I was interviewing for this role, it became very clear that Uber is taking its cultural transformation seriously and truly wants to create a culture where every single person feels proud and heard," Lee told the tech website in an email.

Lee has her work cut out for her. First, she needs to fix Uber's problematic corporate culture – revealed by former Uber engineer Susan Fowler in her blog post, as well as by the ensuing internal investigation. There is also a need to address the company's workplace diversity – which according to Uber's March diversity report, was predominantly white and male, with no black or Latin employees in its tech leadership, Gizmodo reported.
