Residents in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales are bracing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which is expected to make landfall later this week, bringing heavy rain, destructive winds, and dangerous surf conditions.

The system will mark the first direct cyclone landfall in the region in 50 years, according to ABC News. Meteorologists warn that Alfred's impact could be significant, with widespread rainfall of 200 to 500 millimetres, particularly in areas south of its eye. A flood watch has been issued for more than 20 rivers across both states.

Cyclonic wind gusts of up to 125 km/h are also possible near the system’s core, with a broader area facing damaging winds between 90 and 125 km/h. These conditions could bring down trees and power lines, cause structural damage, and lead to crop losses. Meanwhile, waves of up to eight metres are expected along the coastline, with potential coastal erosion and storm surge impacts, particularly during high tide.

As the region prepares for the cyclone, IAG, the parent company of NRMA Insurance, CGU, WFI, and ROLLiN’, has activated its Major Event Response and Natural Perils teams to assist affected customers.

Luke Gallagher (pictured above), executive general manager for claims at NRMA Insurance, urged residents to take precautionary measures while conditions remain safe.

“To help prepare your property for extreme weather, we encourage people to clear gutters, downpipes and drains to prevent rainwater overflow into your home. Secure loose backyard items to reduce the risk of strong winds lifting outdoor furniture and trampolines, trim overhanging trees and branches around your home, and clean up debris around your property,” Gallagher said.

IAG’s claims teams and partner builders are on standby to provide immediate support, including temporary accommodation, emergency financial assistance, and urgent repairs where needed.

“You can lodge your claim online or over the phone, and our claims teams will be ready to help you. Where required, we will provide immediate temporary accommodation and emergency financial assistance and undertake any make-safe repairs to your property, as soon as it’s safe to do so,” Gallagher said.

Authorities continue to monitor Alfred’s trajectory, with current forecasts indicating landfall between the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast by Thursday or early Friday.
