Town hall for NQ flood-affected residents postponed

Insurance News

A community town hall meeting organized by insurers for North Queensland residents impacted by recent flooding has been postponed due to the looming threat of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Originally scheduled for Thursday, the event in Ingham has been delayed as safety concerns take priority.

Insurance providers stated that the welfare of community members and staff remains their top concern. As a result, all planned travel and community events across Queensland and New South Wales have been postponed until Cyclone Alfred passes. A rescheduled date for the town hall will be announced in the coming weeks, with registered attendees notified directly.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding,” the insurers said in a media release.

Cyclone Alfred expands warning zone

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has expanded the cyclone warning zone to include areas stretching south of the New South Wales border to Grafton. The watch zone remains active for locations from Sandy Cape to Double Island Point in Queensland, including K’gari.

Emergency services are urging residents in affected areas to remain vigilant as the cyclone intensifies. Queensland Police have deployed additional officers to the Sunshine Coast, where doorknocking efforts are underway in at-risk suburbs, including Golden Beach, Maroochydore, and Coolum. Authorities warn of potential coastal erosion, heavy rainfall of up to 200mm, and wind gusts reaching 90kph.

Residents are encouraged to tune in for real-time updates.
