Talbot Underwriting has announced that Steve Ward will take on the newly created role of head of underwriting for the Australian office of the international firm.

Ward, who will also keep his current role of senior class underwriter of crisis management at Talbot Australia, is an insurance industry veteran, having held positions at XL Catlin and AIG in Sydney and Brisbane prior to joining the Talbot business.

Adam Matteson, managing director of Talbot Australia, told Insurance Business that the creation of the new role will help “the expansion of the syndicate into new lines and the general optimistic growth view that we have moving forward.”

Ward noted that as the business continues its growth in Australia following its recent launch, the business will look to utilise its international experience.

“We are only 18 months in and we have got 5 or 6 lines of business that we write here and have got another 20 or 25 that we write in London that we could write here so we have a lot of potential moving forward,” Ward told Insurance Business.

Matteson said that in the new role, Ward will be responsible for “underwriting management, assisting managing the actual underwriting strategy and execution of the various product lines that we have now and those that we hope to bring on-shore in the near future.”
