Suncorp mobilises response as Cyclone Alfred nears landfall

Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues to impact Australia’s east coast, with severe weather warnings in effect for southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.

With the cyclone expected to bring widespread damage, Suncorp has activated its disaster response efforts as it also prepares for a high volume of claims. On Thursday, the Category 2 system remained stalled offshore, but was expected to make landfall between Bribie Island and Coolangatta today. Authorities have issued flood warnings, urging residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for heavy rain, damaging winds, and potential coastal erosion.

CEO Steve Johnston confirmed that Mobile Disaster Response Hubs, assessors, and builders are ready to be deployed once conditions allow. Additional staff in Australia and New Zealand are prepared to assist.

“This is a stressful time for the communities in the impact zone of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, but our teams are ready to respond as quickly as possible. We now have a good idea of where the cyclone is going to hit and which customers, homes and businesses are in the threat zone,” Johnston said.

“Customers can lodge a claim online 24/7, and we will work hard to provide customers with support as soon as possible. Customer safety is our priority during and after this event,” Johnston said, encouraging customers to submit claims online even if the extent of the damage is unclear.

Once conditions improve, response teams will begin coordinating emergency repairs, including securing damaged roofs, isolating electrical hazards, and arranging temporary accommodation for displaced customers.

Meanwhile, the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) has announced a moratorium on all study transfers for insurance professionals responding to Cyclone Alfred. The policy is intended to ease pressure on those assisting with disaster relief.

“In times of crisis, the insurance industry plays a crucial role in supporting communities and businesses. Our heart goes out to those affected by the cyclone, as well as the insurance professionals working hard to support their communities during this catastrophe. We stand ready to support our members and the wider industry during this challenging time,” ANZIIF CEO Katrina Shanks said.

ANZIIF members requiring additional support are encouraged to contact customer service at [email protected] or +61 (3) 9613 7200 to discuss their individual circumstances.
