Brokers in Queensland are being encouraged to check in with their clients ahead of the upcoming storm season after Suncorp issued a timely warning to residents.
Late last week, the insurance giant released data on storm-related claims across the state during last storm season (October – February) and it made for some surprising reading.
According to the claims data, south Brisbane was the worst-affected area in the state – incurring 1,834 claims – despite the fact that south-east Queensland only saw a small number of severe weather events.
The Sunshine Coast came in second (1,761) followed by the Gold Coast (1,416) and Suncorp spokesperson Joshua Cooney acknowledged this may be somewhat unexpected for those in the region given the small volume of memorable storms experienced last summer.
“There’s no denying summer storms are a part of life for people living in Queensland which means every year we should be prepared,” said Cooney. “No two seasons are the same and as our claims data shows, even low scale weather events can have a big impact.”
Cooney also stressed that now is the time for residents and business-owners to protect their property and possessions for the weather events expected in the coming months.
“Past events have proven that early preparation can make a big difference,” he said. “Simple activities like removing debris from around the yard, cleaning gutters and trimming any low-hanging branches can help reduce possible damage during a storm.”
