In a bid to protect government services and data from increasingly complex and sophisticated cyberattacks, the Victorian government has launched its Cyber Security Strategy – the first Australian state to do so.
The launch, attended by special minister of state Gavin Jennings, cyber experts, and IT industry representatives, was made in response to the constant cyber threats faced by government networks across the world – from lone hackers, political 'hacktivists,' and even foreign governments seeking to infiltrate, steal, and disrupt government services.
The Cyber Security Strategy employs a whole of government approach in order to sustain strong and resilient cyber security defences to protect the delivery of public services in Victoria.

As part of the strategy, the state government will implement the following:
appoint a chief information security officer to oversee government response to ongoing cyber threats and coordinate cross-government action;
work with Emergency Management Victoria in developing cyber emergency governance arrangements;
strengthen partnerships across the public and private sectors to share best practice, intelligence, and insights;
rationalise and coordinate the procurement of proven cyber security services;
develop a workforce plan to attract, develop, and retain skilled cyber security public sector workers; and
present a quarterly cyber security briefing to the Victorian Secretaries Board and the State Crisis and Resilience Committee.
The strategy forms part of the Victorian Government's efforts to ensure that the state has the best new digital technology to deliver modern services, and that these services and the citizen data they contain are resilient against cyberattacks.
