Sparke Helmore has announced David Kerwin’s appointment as a partner in its specialty lines team, effective Nov. 4.

Based in Brisbane, Kerwin (pictured) joins with a strong background in insurance coverage and claims defence, particularly in financial lines, property, and life insurance. His expertise is expected to enhance the firm’s capabilities across multiple sectors.

Kerwin’s practice includes providing policy coverage advice and handling claims in key areas, such as directors and officers liability, management liability, and professional indemnity. He has represented professionals across industries like accounting, finance, and engineering in defending against negligence claims.

In addition, he advises on life insurance policy issues, including total and permanent disability and income protection, and regularly assists insurers with complex policy responses and recovery actions.

The appointment highlights shifting business environments, with Gallagher’s recent report revealing how closer observation of internal and external risks help businesses across various sectors and sizes better navigate complicated market conditions. The report delved into the nature of risk management and how it changes due to challenges such as resource limitations, rising product complexity, and a deeper understanding of business operations.

Malcolm Cameron, Sparke Helmore’s national practice group leader for specialty lines, welcomed Kerwin, emphasising the depth of experience he brings to the team.

“David is a high-calibre partner with a strong market reputation who will bring a great deal of expertise and leading thinking to the firm. His clients appreciate his technical aptitude and commercial approach, and we are extremely pleased that he has decided to join us,” he said.

Previously a partner at Clyde & Co, Kerwin highlighted Sparke Helmore’s alignment with his approach to client service as a key reason for the move.

“When thinking about my next career move, this firm stood out to me as being culturally aligned to how I like to work with others and lead my team. Synergies also existed around our client base, and I saw a great opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of the practice. I am excited to deepen the firm’s offering in the financial lines space in Brisbane and nationally,” he said.
