RACQ has reinforced its road safety message this Christmas by throwing its support behind the Queensland Police Service’s Operation Romeo Sleigh, launched to target the Fatal Five during this festive season.
“Last year, 13 people lost their lives during the holiday period, making it the worst Christmas road toll in a decade,” said Paul Turner, RACQ spokesperson. “Every death on our road isn’t just a tragedy, it’s also completely avoidable. Don’t drive tired, drunk or drugged, or distracted. Wear a seatbelt and be sure you save yourself from distraction. The best gift you can give this year, and every year, is getting home safely to your family and friends.”
Turner said there were a total of 246 deaths on Queensland roads last year.
“Alarmingly, there were even tens of thousands more injured and their lives will never be the same,” Turner said. “Sadly, we know regional roads are over-represented in these statistics, with motorists driving longer distances and spending longer on the roads. Take the time this Christmas to think about road safety. Before you head off, commit to making good decisions on the road, it could save your life.”
