Insurer RACQ has revealed the most dangerous day of the year to be behind the wheel.
RACQ claims data, covering Nov. 1, 2015 to Oct. 31, 2018, showed that more than 53,000 crashes occurred during the three-year period, with the last day of the working week as the riskiest in Queensland.
Clare Hunter, RACQ spokesperson, said last Friday was the “triple threat” for Queensland motorists.
“Friday is the most common day of the week to have a crash, and the 18th is the most common day of the month for collisions,” Hunter said. “Combine that with plenty of traffic around, with many people now back at work after Christmas and others still on road trip, it could spell disaster.”
According to the RACQ claims data, 9,151 car crashes occurred on Fridays between Nov. 2015 and Oct. 2018. This is followed by Wednesday, with 8,880 crashes, and Thursday, with 8,699. Sunday was revealed to be the safest day for road trips, with 4,398 crashes recorded.
To ensure safety while on the road, Hunter urged motorists to drive safely and be alert, particularly if they are covering long distances during the afternoon, with 3pm-4pm the time they’re most likely to have a crash.
“This might be because we’re tired in the afternoons or because there may be more traffic about – but it’s important to keep your wits about you and avoid a crash,” Hunter said.
The RACQ spokesperson also urged those travelling long distances to observe the Fatal Five.
“Take regular breaks so you’re not fatigued and avoid any on-road distractions,” Hunter said. “Don’t speed or drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and make sure everyone is buckled up.”
