New RACQ research has revealed January as the month when unsuspecting holidaymakers are most at risk of beach theft, prompting the insurer to urge Queenslanders to take better care of their valuables while on the beach this summer.
RACQ data showed that 206 insurance claims were lodged in the past three years across the state, with January as the worst month.
“We want you to enjoy your day at the beach, but remember thieves go to the beach too,” said Lucinda Ross, RACQ spokesperson. “We’re warning people to be extra careful and to keep a sharp eye on personal items at all times because opportunistic thieves might be watching. We also highly recommend the buddy system where you and a friend take turns swimming while the other is watching over your valuables.”
Ross said rings, bracelets, prescription glasses, and laptops were among the most common items stolen.
“Unfortunately, some of Queensland’s best beaches are also the most likely places where incidents occur,” Ross said. “Main Beach and Burleigh top the list on the Gold Coast, while Mooloolaba is the most popular haunt for Sunshine Coast thieves. People should carefully consider whether wearing or taking valuables to the beach is absolutely necessary, and check their insurance cover is up-to-date before heading off on holidays.”
