Insurer RACQ is urging Queensland motorists to brush up on their safety driving skills this Road Safety Week, as new research showed that nearly three quarters of drivers had admitted to doing one of the leading causes of road deaths in the state.

The Queensland Road Safety Week, from Aug. 27 to 31, highlight key road safety issues, including the Fatal Five – speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, distracted driving, driving while tired, and driving while intoxicated – to encourage motorists to take greater responsibility behind the wheel. Different road user groups will be featured throughout the week, including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, heavy vehicle drivers, and motorcyclists.

Paul Turner, RACQ spokesperson, said it was shocking that the club’s latest research showed that 72.8% of drivers admitted to speeding, despite it being one of the leading causes of deaths on Queensland roads.

“Tragically, the vast majority of fatalities in Queensland are caused by human error and are avoidable – people who’re speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, distracted, are too tired, or are drink driving,” Turner said. “Across the State, 166 people have died this year with thousands more seriously injured.”

Turner urged all road users to think about the actions they take to protect themselves and those around them

“Whether they’re in a car or on a bike, we want everyone to get home safely,” Turner said. “A licence isn’t a right, it’s a privilege, so if you need to brush up on the rules, now’s the perfect time to do it.”
