Almost half of WA's most dangerous roads and intersections have no budget allocated to fix them, according to RAC's Risky Roads campaign scorecard.
In February of 2017, the RAC Risky Roads campaign identified WA's most dangerous roads and intersections based on more than 6,000 nominations, to encourage further investment in road safety. The recently released scorecard revealed just how much progress has been made since then.
“We’re pleased that works are underway on a range of the state’s riskiest roads,” said Will Goldsby, RAC general manager for corporate affairs. “However, it is concerning that many remain unfunded and in several cases, it would appear, are not even planned.”
RAC said that of the 10 roads and 10 intersections it identified, almost half – in areas such as Albany, Capel, Edgewater, Greemount, Mount Hawthorn, Mount Lawley, and Oakford — have still not had funding allocated.
“WA consistently has one of the worst road fatality rates in the country, and we continue to fall short of road trauma reduction targets,” Golsby said. “There is an urgent need for the state government to increase its investment in works that will improve the safety of our roads and better protect WA motorists. It’s estimated that Western Australia has an $845m road maintenance backlog. A more strategic approach to road safety auditing is required, as well as a dedicated funding commitment to reduce the maintenance backlog by at least 30%.”
