Motoring services and insurance provider RAA has identified Main South Road and Oakland’s Rail Crossing as South Australia’s riskiest road and intersection respectively in its Risky Roads campaign.

Charles Mountain, RAA senior manager of road safety, said Main South Road received the most nominations of any road and intersection in this year’s survey, garnering 406 out of the 2,900 nominations.

“Most of the nominations were for the section of road between Noarlunga and Myponga, with concerns raised about its uneven surface, narrow lanes and a lack of overtaking lanes,” said Mountain. “Traffic volumes have been steadily increasing along this route as the urban sprawl has moved into areas such as Seaford and Aldinga, and road users feel it needs to be upgraded to meet demand.”

Also making it to the top 10 list of dangerous roads were the following:

  1. Horrocks Highway (Roseworthy to Clare)
  2. Princes Highway (Kingston SE to Millicent, via inland)
  3. Owen Road (Templers to Owen)
  4. Main North Road (Gepps Cross to Salisbury).
  5. North East Road (Holden Hill to Chain of Ponds) and Copper Coast Highway (Port Wakefield to Kadina)
  6. Port Wakefield Road (Dry Creek to Lower Light)
  7. Port Wakefield Road (Dry Creek to Lower Light)
  8. Main Road (Blackwood & Coromandel Valley)
  9. South Eastern Freeway (Glen Osmond to Hahndorf);  Southern Ports Highway (Kingston SE to Millicent, via Robe); and Barrier Highway (Saddleworth to Manoora)

Speaking about this year’s riskiest intersection, Mountain said: “In the case of Oaklands Rail Crossing, respondents highlighted its confusing layout, and inadequate crossing or turning opportunities.”

Also included in the list of riskiest intersections are the following:
  1. Coromandel Parade & Shepherds Hill Road (Blackwood Roundabout)
  2. Aldinga Beach Road & Main South Road, Aldinga
  3. Main South Road & Tatachilla Road, Tatachilla
  4. Dalkeith Road & Main North Road, Blakeview
  5. Old Princes Highway & Woodside Road, Nairne; Bull Creek Road & Paris Creek Road, Paris Creek;
  1. North East Road & South Para Road, Chain of Ponds; Playford Highway & Tinsmith Road, Kingscote; and Golden Grove Road & Hancock Road, Surrey Downs

Mountain said many of the nominated roads take travellers to key tourist destinations “through the most picturesque parts of the state.”

“With uneven surfaces, pot holes, narrow lanes, crumbling road edges, and a lack of overtaking lanes, these roads are in need of attention to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
