Insurer RAA is inviting South Australians to attend its free educational program in Fleurieu Peninsula this month.

RAA’s CarFit program, delivered in partnership with UniSA, aims to improve the safety, confidence, and comfort of older drivers by providing them advice and information on how to adjust their car correctly for their best driving position.

“Older drivers are often the safest, because they are more likely to wear a seatbelt and are less likely to speed, or drink and drive,” RAA said. “However, older drivers are also more likely to be killed in a crash due to fragility associated with ageing. Ageing can affect vision, flexibility, strength, and range of motion, as well as size and height.”

A CarFit session will feature trained technicians to teach participants about recommended vehicle adjustments to minimise blind spots and provide the best protection in a crash, as well as an occupational therapist to provide advice on mobility aids to improve driver comfort, or help drivers with getting in and out of their vehicle.

“The CarFit program is now in its eighth year and has made recommendations to over 840 South Australian drivers,” said Belinda Maloney, RAA community education manager. “Although CarFit has been developed for older drivers, drivers of any age are also welcome to attend. Come along to one of our scheduled events or contact us to organise an event at your lifestyle village or local community centre.”
