New claims data has revealed Gold Coast to be Queensland's worst location for car and home thefts, prompting insurer RACQ to remind residents to be extra vigilant to avoid being the next victims.

Since 2015, the city saw almost 400 cars stolen and almost 650 homes burgled, which “proves the Gold Coast is a hot spot for criminals,” said Kirsty Clinton, RACQ spokesperson. “Local residents need to be vigilant about home and car security to ensure they’re not victims in the future.”

The claims data, which covered Jan. 1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2017, also showed Logan, Townsville, Moreton Bay, and Brisbane South to be popular locations for car thieves.

The top five spots for home burglary, meanwhile, were Logan, Moreton Bay, Brisbane South, and Ipswich.

Clinton said there were some simple steps property owners could take to keep the thieves at bay.

“Always lock your car doors and keep the windows up, park in a secure garage or well-lit, well-populated location, and never leave valuables on display in your vehicle,” she said. “When it comes to your home, lock your doors, consider investing in an alarm or sensor light, and if you trust your neighbours, ask them to be on the lookout when you’re away.”
