Transport and logistics specialist NTI has issued a warning on the nightmare before Christmas – port protests and strikes.

According to NTI, protests have blocked container terminals at Sydney’s Port Botany this week, halting cargo movements.

The interruption follows significant delays caused by ongoing industrial action by the Maritime Union of Australia. Operational difficulties and a cyberattack also impacted land operations at ports across Australia.

Warning ahead of Christmas

As Christmas season approaches, NTI warned that the interruption would make it challenging for logistics workers to do their job   and meet increased demand.

“It’s likely employees will need to work additional night and weekend shifts to make up for delays, which will increase operational costs,” the insurer said.

NTI also recently warned Australians, particularly business owners and operators, to brace for this year’s “extreme” bushfire season.

NTI logistics risk engineer Kurt Herron urged business owners and operators to assess and update emergency contacts, processes, and business continuity plans (BCPs).

“For the transport, shipping, and logistics sectors, it’s critical for the safety of people, freight movement, and protecting the day-to-day operations of the business,” he said. “It’s important people know what to do quickly. Conduct evacuation drills, back up your critical data, and have emergency contact numbers such as your local fire service, council disaster dashboards, and bushfire maps readily available for all staff to access.”
