Homeowners in North and Far North Queensland affected by recent floods will soon have access to grants of up to $10,000 to improve their homes' resilience to extreme weather.

The Stronger Homes Grant Program is part of the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), with costs jointly covered by the Australian and Queensland governments.

The initiative was announced in Ingham by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, alongside representatives from the insurance sector, including Suncorp and the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA). The funding will help eligible homeowners make structural improvements such as raising electrical switchboards, hot water systems, and air-conditioning units above flood levels.

Suncorp chief executive consumer insurance Lisa Harrison said the grants provide practical solutions to reduce damage in flood-prone areas.

“We welcome today’s announcement that will help homeowners improve their resilience to extreme weather through achievable and practical upgrades,” Harrison said.

“In the aftermath of a flood, it is often the damage to the internal systems of a home that can be very challenging. Practical upgrades such as raising electrical switchboards, data and electrical points, hot water systems, and air conditioner units above the flood level can reduce the impact of future floods, meaning people can get back into their homes sooner.”

The grants align with broader efforts by insurers and the government to improve disaster resilience in Queensland. ICA deputy CEO Kylie Macfarlane said the program plays a critical role in protecting lives and properties while also addressing long-term insurance costs.

“Reducing flood risk through programs like this one not only better protects lives and property but is the only sustainable way to put downward pressure on premiums,” Macfarlane said.
