Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that Dr Daniel Mulino (main picture) will be the next Assistant Treasurer and Financial Services minister. The role is responsible for economic policy relevant to the insurance industry.
The Prime Minister, according to news reports, confirmed the appointment this morning in Canberra during an announcement about the government’s new cabinet.
Mulino chaired the government inquiry into insurers’ response to the 2022 floods. The final report included 86 recommendations that aimed to strengthen the General Insurance Code of Practice and industry regulations.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the news.
Andrew Hall, the ICA’s CEO said the appointment “signals that the Prime Minister and his Government takes seriously the important contribution financial services make to the economy and to the lives of millions of Australians.”
The Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) congratulated Mulino.
“Dr Mulino has a clear track record of improving outcomes in the insurance industry. He understands the protection needs of all Australians and the importance of access to a strong financial safety net,” said Chris Cupitt, CEO of CALI.
Mulino replaces former minister Stephen Jones, who announced his retirement from politics in January.
Albanese said the new cabinet ministers will be sworn in during a ceremony on Tuesday morning.
