Markel, the insurance division of Markel Group Inc, has named Scott Jordan as its new claims manager for casualty in Australia.

The Sydney-based role will see Jordan (pictured) reporting to Lisa Mitchell, Markel’s head of claims for Australia.

Scott Jordan’s career

Jordan brings extensive experience to the position, with more than two decades in insurance claims management in both the UK and Australia.

He joins Markel from Chubb, where he led a casualty claims team during his 12-year tenure. He has also held roles at RBS Insurance, Marsh McLennan, and NFU Mutual, managing claims across a range of business lines.

Markel bolsters claims expertise in Australia

Mitchell said that Jordan’s appointment underscores Markel’s commitment to strengthening its claims expertise in the Australian market.

“We’re delighted that Scott has chosen to join us at Markel. We feel fortunate that our vision and approach has attracted an extremely capable and proactive claims professional to be our inaugural casualty claims manager in Australia,” she said.

Ahmed Farag, head of casualty for Australia, noted that Jordan’s ability to navigate complex casualty claims would enhance the company’s service delivery to clients and brokers.

“With his specialisation in complex casualty claims and international experience, we’re confident that Scott will be an important asset to the team. Scott also is a firm believer in putting our customers and brokers first, which is a true reflection of the Markel core values in action,” he said.

Asia-Pacific growth efforts

Jordan’s appointment comes amid Markel’s Asia-Pacific region hiring spree this year.

In Singapore, Markel recently announced the creation of a new leadership position as part of its regional growth strategy. Wanshi Lin has been appointed as head of Singapore, tasked with overseeing underwriting operations and driving business planning through Markel’s Lloyd’s Singapore platform.

Lin has been with Markel since 2018, starting as an assistant underwriter with a focus on marine insurance. She advanced to senior underwriter in 2023. Before joining Markel, she gained market strategy and broking experience as an assistant vice president at Marsh Singapore.

In her new role, Lin will report to Christian Stobbs, managing director for Asia Pacific.

Stobbs emphasised Singapore’s strategic importance as a hub for specialty insurance in the region, expressing confidence in Lin’s ability to deepen Markel’s broker and client engagement.

“I’m thrilled about the energy and innovative ideas Wanshi will bring to this pivotal role,” he said.

Also based in Singapore, Jack Taylor took on the role of executive, distribution strategies and business development for Asia Pacific. He will focus on strengthening broker relationships and supporting market growth initiatives.

Taylor’s experience includes roles in underwriting, broker management, and business development at Zurich Insurance, where he worked across London and Singapore. His new responsibilities will involve working closely with regional leadership and underwriters to enhance the company’s distribution framework.
