An Inter Risk broker has been awarded an annual Affiliated FM scholarship to learn about property loss prevention in the USA.

Emma O’Rourke is in Rhode Island, where FM Global Research Campus is based, learning about the science of property loss prevention. Rhode Island is particularly relevant as fires, cyclone-force winds and flying debris are commonplace in the area.

The winner was chosen from brokers around the country, who submitted a discussion paper on “What is the real cost of a major property loss?”

Lyndon Broad, the newly appointed director of Affiliated FM said: “Emma’s discussion piece clearly highlighted the premise that there is more to a loss than insurance can pay out, and how intangibles such as brand reputation and the inability to attract quality workers can result from a major property loss. Overall, it was great to see the clear effort people had put in and the broad ranging insights from all the applicants.”

He added: “Having seen people’s reaction to a large fire – up close and personal or feeling the shockwave from a handful of dust exploding – I am keen to see what Emma thinks. The Affiliated FM scholarship really is a unique experience. There is nothing quite like witnessing, first-hand, the full-scale testing that drives our company’s loss prevention focus.”

Ari Bitzilis, of OAMPS, was the runner-up and entries from Nathan Brown, of Coverforce, Liz Penfold, of JLT, and Willis’ Xavier Luscombe were also highly commended.
