Global law firm DLA Piper has welcomed tax insurance specialist Adam Smith to its taxation practice as a new partner.
Smith has a wealth of experience across tax-related areas, including cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions, corporate restructuring, property transactions, stamp duty, and goods and services tax (GST). He works across various sectors, particularly in insurance and financial services, energy and natural resources, industrials, and real estate.
Aside from being an expert in underwriting specific tax insurance policies, Smith is known as a market leader, advising on the tax aspects of warranty and indemnity insurance underwriting, acting for leading insurance underwriters across the APAC market.
Smith joins DLA Piper from Norton Rose Fulbright. In his new role as a partner, he will use his broad skillset to boost the firm's taxation practice in Melbourne, led by corporate partner Jyoti Singh, who worked with Smith closely for many years when they were both at NRF.
Commenting on the appointment, DLA Piper Australian managing partner Amber Matthews said: “We are thrilled to have someone of Adam's experience join our taxation practice. He has a broad skill set across a range of sectors, which will suit our client base. In addition, his deep expertise in the taxation aspects of warranty and indemnity insurance underwriting is a strategic opportunity for the firm.”
Smith commented: “I'm excited to be joining DLA Piper, which has such a strong international reputation and standing, particularly in cross-border M&A and across the insurance sector in Australia, where it already has a leading warranty & indemnity practice. I look forward to contributing to the further growth and success of the firm.”
