Early assessment prepares insurers for claims surge

DAS snapshot reveals Cyclone Alfred’s threat to rural properties

As Cyclone Alfred moves inland, insurers are assessing its potential impact on rural and regional properties, with early estimates suggesting that hundreds, if not thousands, could be affected.

To assist in the response, data and analytics provider DAS has released an early impact snapshot for the insurance industry. Unlike traditional catastrophe mapping, DAS’ monitoring tool provides immediate assessments, allowing insurers to quickly determine which properties are in the cyclone’s path.

DAS CEO Anthony Willmott said the tool enables property owners to confirm they are affected rather than manually reporting damage.

“This also buys time for the insurance industry and government to prepare its response and triage resources to those directly in the storm’s path,” Willmott said, adding that the system is designed to speed up the claims process and ensure timely support for affected communities.

“In some instances, it can take months for affected properties to be confirmed by government and then receive support. This hopefully expedites that process too.”
