Specialist law firm Barry Nilsson (BN) has bolstered its insurance and health capabilities by appointing a new principal and establishing a five-member team.
Toby Biddle, former head of Norton Rose Fullbright's Australian life sciences and healthcare practice, has taken the role of principal at BN in Sydney, effective April 3, 2023.
The new hire has been recognised as one of Australia's leading healthcare and product liability litigators by Chambers & Partners (for Life Sciences), Best Lawyers in Australia (for Product Liability Litigation and Insurance Law), The Legal 500 for Disputes (Class Actions), and Doyle's Guide (as a Leading Lawyer for Medical Negligence – Defendant).

Rhett Kennedy (pictured), BN board chairman and national insurance & health lead principal, said the latest appointment in Sydney was part of the firm's 2025 strategic commitment to further develop its national practice through a mix of client-driven organic growth and targeted expansion.
“Toby and his team have acted for a range of clients, including insurers, healthcare product manufacturers, and corporate and individual healthcare providers, in some of the most significant class actions over the past decade,” Kennedy said.
“Combined with their expertise in providing representation and advice on individual medical malpractice and healthcare product liability actions, regulatory investigations, inquests, and commissions of inquiry, their experience will significantly strengthen the firm's capabilities in this high-demand specialist area of law.”
Biddle said: “My team and I are excited to be joining BN to expand the firm's existing strong health practice with our specialist life sciences expertise, with the ultimate goal to assist BN's clients who participate in, and insure, Australia's healthcare industry.”
Biddle and his team joined BN in Sydney after the firm expanded its Adelaide team by appointing five senior lawyers.
