The winners of the 2017 Australian Insurance Industry Awards were named at a ceremony recently in Sydney.
The event, co-hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (
ANZIIF) and founding partner Asia Insurance Review (AIR), was held at The Star in Sydney, with Australian comedian Peter Rowsthorn brightening the occasion as master of ceremonies.
Some familiar faces scooped the broking and general insurance categories, including
Austbrokers Coast to Coast, which won Small Broking Company of the Year;
Aon, for Large Insurance Company of the Year; RAA Insurance, for Small-Medium General Insurance Company of the Year;
NRMA Insurance, for Direct General Insurance Company of the Year; and
Allianz Australia, for Large General Insurance Company of the Year.
Aon, five-time winner of Large Broking Company of the Year award in the past six years, was commended for its ongoing contribution to industry-specific research and though leadership. The firm was also lauded for its strong customer focus and delivery of customer insight through the use of market analytics.

Other winners included the following:
- GSA Insurance Brokers, Medium Broking Company of the Year;
- CHU Underwriting Agencies, Underwriting Agency of the Year;
- AIA Australia, Life Insurance Company of the Year;
- Suncorp’s Cyclone Resilience Benefit, Innovation of the Year;
- Barry.Nilsson., Professional Services Firm of the Year;
- TAL, Women’s Employer of the Year; and
- Allianz Australia’s One Service, Insurance Learning Program of the Year.
Taking home individual excellence awards were Kimberley Jonsson of CHU Underwriting Agencies as Young Insurance Professional of the Year; Vivek Bhatia of icare as Insurance Leader of the Year; and John Lamble, who was given the ANZIIF Lifetime Achievement Award.
“With a breadth of the industry represented amongst this year’s winners, it is very pleasing to see that this industry and its people are increasingly focused on the betterment of our industry, our staff and our community through various projects, programs, and innovations,” said ANZIIF CEO
Prue Willsford. “While not everyone can be a winner, it’s been great to see this focus evident throughout many submissions for this year’s awards.”
“The winners of this year’s awards really speak for the glory of the industry,” said AIR editor-in-chief Sivam Subramanian. “Insurance still has so much to offer society, and the winners of tonight’s wards must make this pitch and push the standards higher.”
