Global specialty re/insurer SiriusPoint has announced a leadership change in its chief underwriting office as it prepares for growth and increased profitability in 2025.

Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Anthony Shapella (pictured right) will assume the role of group chief underwriting officer and join the executive leadership team.

Additionally, David Govrin will now focus exclusively on his position as group president and CEO of global reinsurance. Govrin has held dual roles as group president, chief underwriting officer, and global P&L lead for reinsurance since February 2021.

Scott Egan, CEO of SiriusPoint, stated that the company’s growth plans for 2025 prompted a reassessment of its chief underwriting office structure.

“This is part of a continuing plan to ensure our operating model is well structured for the next chapter of SiriusPoint’s journey to become a best-in-class class insurer and reinsurer,” Egan said.

Egan highlighted Govrin’s leadership in driving the company's underwriting improvements, which included talent development initiatives. He said that both Govrin and Shapella are valued team members, noting Shapella’s growth under Govrin’s mentorship since joining SiriusPoint 15 months ago.

“We value the opportunity to promote talent from within our organization and are pleased that Anthony will lead our chief underwriting office as David continues to focus on executing our plans to further grow SiriusPoint’s reinsurance offering,” Egan said.

Govrin reflected on the underwriting team’s recent performance, crediting their "focused and disciplined underwriting" over the past eight quarters.

“Anthony has been a great addition to the CUO office and is well positioned to lead the underwriting organization and continue our progress to deliver long-term profitable growth. Anthony will be a fantastic addition to our executive team,” he said.

Govrin also said that he will concentrate fully on SiriusPoint’s expanding reinsurance segment, which he noted has been a significant driver of profitability over the last two years.

Shapella joined SiriusPoint in September 2023 as deputy chief underwriting officer after previously serving at AIG as head of portfolio analytics for general insurance.

“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to join the executive leadership team and be promoted to group chief underwriting officer,” Shapella said. “I would like to thank David for his mentorship and leadership of the chief underwriting office, and I am excited by the opportunities ahead.”
